I am proud to announce that Trifecta Publications is taking submissions for our first issue. As a submission-based publication, we are excited to see what original works you might be able to contribute. When we first came up with the idea for Trifecta, we had all of you in mind. Our first theme is BAMBOOZLED!.

Now, you might be asking yourself, “Who and what is Trifecta?” We, as people, are Alis Atwell, Ashley Singley, and Christopher Starbody. We, as Trifecta, are a submission-based triannual publication. We curate a collection of multimedia works by diverse artists and offer a broad range of perspectives on a simple idea. Our intent is to create a contained archive for collectors. Think “treasure box.”

Trifecta manufactures each individual archive by hand. We design the inside of the book around what you submit. We strive to work with our artists to create something unique, so we ask participants to be creative with the presentation of your submission and challenge us.

Each issue has a theme, which can be interpreted in any way you see fit.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINE:
Trifecta accepts a wide variety of submissions. Please feel free to submit anything that moves you: audio, photocopies, video, text, found material, screen prints, photographs, etc. We don’t discriminate—we love it all. Please make sure that your submission is based on the announced theme. If we accept your submission, we will contact you within three weeks.
We only accept electronic submissions. Please send materials to trifectapublishing@gmail.com. Once accepted, the artist is responsible to supply fifty-four copies. FIFTY-FOUR copies! Yes, this may sound like a lot, but this is a chance to be a part of something unique. We aren’t asking for archival prints or hand-painted pieces (though we will gladly accept them), but we are asking you to be creative in your submissions.

Since this is our premiere project we can not issue monetary compensation, but we are offering a new way of thought and collaboration in order to present a wide range of ideas that will take your work, and the art world, to new heights. Additionally, we will be using all our man power to ensure that your work is presented in the highest quality to people in the professional world and into the hands of tastemakers and collectors around the world.

We only accept original pieces of art. If the piece has been published before, please let us know where.

ABOUT US:
The founding members of Trifecta first met at Columbia College in Chicago. All three pursued a degree in photography and moved to New York on separate occasions to pursue careers in the arts. Feeling stifled by the art scene, but connected by the Midwest, these three curators decided to start a publication that is completely unique and challenging.

Anderson Ranch offers an artists’ residency program designed to encourage the creative, intellectual and personal growth of emerging and established visual artists. Finalists are chosen on the basis of artistic merit by an independent jury of established working artists and will live and work at Anderson Ranch for a approximately ten week residency period. While in residence, all artists will share in an established community of interaction, conceptual development and intense production of work. Given the staffing and facilities available at the Ranch, its artist residency program will become one of the most robust programs of its type in the United States.

The Anderson Ranch Artists’ Residency Program is designed to foster creative, intellectual and personal growth for emerging and established visual artists. There are no specific educational qualifications for entry into the program. Awards will be made to those, who in the exclusive opinion of the jury, have submitted the best work by the application deadline.
While in residence, artists will be encouraged to pursue their own work amidst a group of artistic peers. The residency is designed to allow artists to take risks and pursue new projects and ideas, free from every day pressures. The residency is for those artists desirous of advancing their work or creating a new body of work. Residents are encouraged to pursue a multidisciplinary approach toward their work while at the Ranch. Resident artists will be provided with housing, studio space, meals and certain other benefits and will be required to submit only a nominal residency fee of $100. While in residence, there is an optional structure of critical study such as studio visits, visiting artists, etc.

With the first installment completed and awaiting exhibition, The Exposure Project is pleased to announce that it will be moderating Graphic Intersections: v. 02, a second chapter of the project. The first round was one of the most unexpected and rewarding projects that we’ve worked on to date and we are excited to see another installment unfold. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, the statement below explains it in detail:

Graphic Intersections, loosely inspired by the old Surrealist and Dadaist game Exquisite Corpse, is a project that will attempt to unite disparate artists in an interconnected, photographic relay of images inspired by one another. For those unfamiliar with Exquisite Corpse, it is succinctly described here:

“Among Surrealist techniques exploiting the mystique of accident was a kind of collective collage of words or images called the cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse). Based on an old parlor game, it was played by several people, each of whom would write a phrase on a sheet of paper, fold the paper to conceal part of it, and pass it on to the next player for his contribution.”

Essentially, this is how Graphic Intersections works. We will collect submissions from interested photographers until January 5th, at which point we will select the participating artists and designate one of these photographers to start the whole thing off. The first photographer will be given a prompting word to work from and will subsequently make photographs inspired by this idea. They will send us their favorite and most representative image from this session which we will then send along to the next artist. The succeeding artist, based solely on their visual, emotional, intellectual, or philosophical response, will in turn make photographs in artistic reaction to the one they were given. The artists involved will not be given any written material to accompany the photograph, nor will they know whose image they’re responding to. This is designed to propagate randomness and avoid preconceived biases. This process will continue until the chain has been completed.

There are a few stipulations with the Graphic Intersections project. Firstly, participating photographers will be required to shoot, develop/import and submit their chosen image in no more than 2 weeks. I realize that this does not leave a tremendous amount of time to carry out this process. However, in the interest of completing this venture in under a year it seems necessary to instate a time frame. Secondly, chosen photographers will have to exercise a certain amount of patience and trust in the process, as there will be 20 artists each with a two week time slot. Lastly, images submitted for this project must be taken specifically for Graphic Intersections. Each photographer must submit a new image which does exist in a previously constructed body of work.

Submission Procedure

- Interested photographers should visit the Exposure Project website and pay the $10 submission fee.
- You may then submit up to 10 images
- Images should be at least 1000 pixels on the longest side
- Formatted as RGB JPG’s @ 72 dpi
- All files should be labeled with the artist’s last name and corresponding # (example: smith_1.jpg)
- E-mail submitted images to: ben@theexposureproject.com

Please note that submitted images will not be included in Graphic Intersections. They are simply used reference points in the curatorial process. Additionally, all photographers will receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours of their submission.

ROLL SERIES is a new collection of pocket-sized books from My Idea of Fun. Each book features one unedited roll of 35mm film by each artist. The books will be released in sets of three. The first set includes work by Ed Panar, Emmy Volkar and Ian Rummell.

The Present Group, a quarterly art subscription service, seeks proposals from artists for projects that are reproducible in intent. We are looking for projects that will result in a limited edition, artist multiple, or a single work that consists of multiple parts. What is expected of the artists:
Propose a project where the final product will be reproduced art pieces.  This is an opportunity to branch out and test a different approach to art making.  If you already work in multiples, that’s fine too. What we send to our subscribers could be a piece from a limited edition or parts of a larger work.  The project will be made exclusively through The Present Group.  We understand that similar themes and images may be used throughout your other work, however you agree not to create the exact project again.

What we look for:
Most importantly, your work must be reproducible in intent.  There will be no “original”.  Each piece will be the work itself, or a part of the work.  Our editions are between 50-100
We choose based on the piece’s Visual, Conceptual, or Experiential interest.
In order to keep our subscribers exposed to a large variety of work, we keep in mind the progression in which they are released, in terms of media, themes, style.
Is it feasible?  Can we afford to make it? If we love your project but don’t think we can afford to do it now, we may ask to hold on to your proposal for a future possibility.

Appreciation for Selected Artists:
- $500  (This is an honorarium; this does not go toward the making of the pieces)
- 4 of the produced work for your own collection or to sell on your own.
- A captive audience of Art Lovers and Collectors
- All the contextual information we create for your piece, including artist info, critiques, and video will remain free on-line as long as TPG exists

These auctions include a curated selection of works of art by promising emerging talent. The auction is a showcase before an audience of collectors, dealers, museum professionals and gallery owners. PHOTOGRAPHY NOW

It’s the Center for Photography at Woodstock’s annual Photography Now call for entries where winners will be published in CPW’s magazine, PQ. This year CPW has invited acclaimed gallery owner and writer/curator, Debra Klomp Ching to select the most exciting new photography from the national and international field!

ELIGIBILITY

From traditional to digital, all photographic techniques and approaches are welcome. Straight photography, fine art, narrative, documentary, landscape, social issues, still life, mixed media incorporating photography, photographic installations, and digital images & collages – all will be considered! CPW staff and ADV/Board members and their families are not eligible to apply.

PUBLICATION

Accepted work will be published in issue #99 of CPW’s internationally distributed magazine, PQ. All who enter will receive a one year membership which includes a subscription to PQ.

TIMELINE

Results will be announced on or before December 4, 2009. Selected participants will be given instructions on how, when, and what to send for publication. Entries that are not selected for Photography Now 2009 – PQ will be returned in December, as long as they are accompanied by a clearly labeled self addressed, stamped, return envelope.

CPW has created a easy to follow application form with accompanying image script for you to use in submitting your entry. Entries that do not include the application form will not be accepted.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

Jurying will be conducted via projection of digital images only. A completed application form is required. Guidelines for submissions must be followed as outlined:

CD-ROM ENTRIES - If sending a CD-ROM, title each file with your “last name_ image title.” We accept JPEG files at 300 DPI, no larger than 5×7”. Include a separate printed image list with your submission information - See page 2 of application form.

No submissions will be accepted via email. Artist statements and resumes are encouraged, but not required. You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not responsible for unlabeled submission materials. In cases in which you are submitting a CD and do not want it returned, please be sure to provide your email address so we may notify you of the results. If a return envelope is not provided your materials will be discarded, but a letter of notice regarding acceptance status will be sent. Every precaution is taken to assure the return of your materials, but CPW is not responsible for loss or damage of any entry materials.

JUROR

Debra Klomp Ching is the co-owner/co-director of the KLOMPCHING GALLERY, described as dynamic and one of the galleries to watch in NYC. Its exhibitions have been reviewed in publications such as The New Yorker, Hotshoe, New York Magazine, ArtReview, The New York Times, The British Journal of Photography, The Architect’s Newspaper and Modern Painters.

Mrs Ching has been an invited reviewer to several notable festivals including Houston’s Fotofest, Review Santa Fe, Rhubarb-Rhubarb, and Atlanta Celebrates Photography. She is an experienced juror and has been a judge for Photo Lucida’s Critical Mass, Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward, American Photo’s Emerging Talent, En Foco’s People, Places, Things and Perkins Center for the Arts Annual Photography Exhibition.

In addition to owning and operating the KLOMPCHING GALLERY, Debra Klomp Ching is a freelance consultant, writer and educator. Her writing has been published in Magenta Magazine, photo-eye Booklist, (re)collect (writer and editor), Nahtsellen and PDN. She will be serving as  the Guest Editor for the 99th issue of PQ and is serving as the 2009 external examiner for the photography thesis program at the Maryland Institute College of Arts. As a private consultant, she provides creative and professional advice to photographers intending to or working within a fine art context and acts as an adviser to collectors of contemporary photography.
